Working without words, Runton manages to elicit a strong emotional reaction, not just in the heartwarming ending, but throughout the pages of Just A Little Blue. It's easy to mistakenly dismiss Owly's cartoonish style as being inferior to the detailed muscles and tights of mainstream artists, but Runton is able to display the feelings of his characters with equal if not greater skill than many of his peers. Owly features no dialogue - after all, animals can't speak - instead relying on evocative images to express emotions and desires. Unfortunately, the father of the family wants nothing to do with Owly and Wormy, but that doesn't stop the persistent little owl from attempting to create a friendship. Just A Little Blue is a single, 125-page tale of Owly's attempts to make friends with a family of bluebirds. With his best friend Wormy the worm at his side (or rather, on his head), Owly spends his days in search of natural highs. Owly is an all-too-friendly brown owl who just wants to be friends with, well, everyone.
